Final Renders and Concept Descriptions

Concepts:

"Weak forms are established from a formal deconstruction of a simple shape" - Eisenman.

"Light cuts through the space" - Barragan.

which together form the overarching concept

"Light cuts through formal deconstructions of simple shapes to enhance weak forms"

By interweaving Barragan's humanistic designs with Eisenman's less practical thinking, a structure is designed where there is a constant aesthetic beauty juxtaposed against confusing nonsense. Original plans included more convoluted aspects, but ,similar to the block jutting out of the central column in the original axonometric sketch, the ideas were replaced for practicality.

Although conceptually there was only two large squares, many more were added along the now arched beams to enhance the strength shadows have. Each object is unique in either shape or depth to allow for unique viewing at any point in the arch and at any point of the day, an important aspect of the chosen concept.

While the smaller arches did not alter much in terms of aesthetics, they were bent to more fittingly match the siting by following the angular path. Rather than have the main walkway simply be alongside the light rail stop, they are both integrated together, diverging from the weakness of the simplistic arches in isolation.

Both concepts, the importance of shadows in structure and the simplistic being enhanced via external influences, are carried throughout the structure. It's monolithic presence allows it to be seen from afar yet maintains a presence inviting closer inspection, which is when the true beauty of each element becomes perceptible.

Week 4 - Developed Model and Animations

The Developed Model

Section cut as the basis for the final model. Revival Cycles 'Geometry' (above) and CJ Hendry 'Repeat' (below).

Similar to the materials from second draft, the main flooring (both below and for datum level) is marbled, and the stairs are a mixture of wood and rubber (above), and wood and plastic (below).

The roof, along with the majority of structural supports above, are concrete with texturing of opaque on the roof. The window panels on the datum level also revive the previous efforts as they use translucent as a texture. The surrounding lower walls are simple render to evoke the blank canvas of the artists next work.

The panels along the exterior of the above space are cherry wood again and built to resemble the complex geometric nature of motorcycles.

Animations

Beginning with a floor plan, this video moves upwards as the structure is built underneath. I removed landscape and the datum floor to reduce any clipping. 

This next animation focuses on a side elevation of the entire structure, beginning at top and then panning down. Since the majority of the structure is symmetrical, this would be the view from most side elevations.

Finally, this animation 'climbs' the main supporting pole from the base to the top floor, exploring the main focus of the structure, its shared centre.
